Banana-Republic?

Yet another Republic Day passed by. Like every year, the country’s military might, cultural heritage and achievements in various fields were at display at Rajpath today. We managed to put up a great show(off) this year as well, I hear.

Even though each and every aspect of the unity in diversity that India is, was on display today, some important facets of modern India were completely missing. I watched the parade – thanks to You-tube and was completely taken aback by that fact that most of the building blocks of the nation were not a part of the pomp and show.

I was sure that Corruption would make a grand-show-stopper kind of an appearance but somehow my hopes died as the parade came to an end. No event is complete until a few netas and babus get their due share of black money. Corruption could easily be a new synonym for India, yet it wasn’t showcased in the celebrations today. From grass-root to up above the sky – we all live on it, dwell on it, are even proud of it. A display of how our system really works could have stolen the limelight today. But, as always – someone would have paid someone a bribe to get Corruption out of today’s parade.

Again, I am not sure how they missed to portray our big bang of an explosion. Well, I know that it is not something new but so is our heritage and culture. We are a nation who don’t believe in imparting sex education and encourage all kind of taboos, yet we manage to make babies at an uncontrollable rate- every single year! We would soon be the only super-power in terms of population, yet we forget to put this important aspect of the nation on display today.

The top two items in my list weren’t featured. So, I knew the third one on my mind wasn’t going to make it to Rajpath either. Women have been denied equality since ages in this nation – and this fact making an appearance in today’s celebrations was impossible, to say the least. We worship a thousand goddesses, but we torture and violate our women. Rape culture is a modern day addition to our already rich cultural heritage, but it was comfortably stroked off while displaying the same. So much for hypocrisy! Alas, Burning Brides and Female Foeticide also could not make it. Maybe, the number of cases were not adequate to get these aspects of the Indian society, highlighted today.

Many other important aspects of the real India like Vote Bank Politics, Unemployment, Riots due to religious differences etc. also didn’t find a place in Republic Day celebrations. As proud as an Indian could be for everything that was showcased, there is a hole in my heart for the mis-calculated dimensions of the country, which were neglected but deserved a rightful place in the parade.

Jai Hind!

Wow !! Your capacity for cynicism is amazing. The entire post sounded like a juvenile's frustrated and anguished rant, written in a school-bookish English( 'university in diversity', really?). We can do with a little optimism and faith in the capacity in the abilities of this great nation. Which country in the this big, wide world or in the history of humankind has not passed through a phase in its national life that has embittered some. But it is faith and perseverance of its intellectuals and citizenry that has steered the destiny of that nation to glory. But i see all this pointless as you have decided to sit back and mock rather than inspire people.

    • people who don't accept reality of india are people born to corrupt parents and they are afraid that criticising india will take away all their comfort.hmm sahir ,i am sure that you are one of corrupt indians who makes fellows indians life miserable by not following rules.if you are that positive and inspiring about great nation like india, why don't you go around villages in bihar and rayalaseema of andhra pradesh for campaign with your intellectual inspirational speeches..people will chop your legs and hands if you give moral lessons in corrupt india.i bet million dollars that most of your family lives by corrupt means.speaking good english is no big deal, its useless if you are not morally right and when you don't have substance in brain.people who wants to inspire people give solutions, they don't criticise people who are vocal about reality.i never saw such a dumb guy like sahir who can classify himself as inspirational and honest indian with such stupid comment.

I can clearly understand and feel the pain which most of the countrymen are going through ….. though I don't want parade to show these as said above but I for sure agree that we need to fight and uproot these issues before we can even think of any such celebrations…
Just wishing that these issues can get sorted out someday and then it will be Happy Republic Day…..

Exactly, my point. Also, I feel we waste huge amount of money in needless celebrations, which could instead be used in feeding the poor.

I was only thinking about the huge amount of money wasted in these celebrations. I am certain that the corrupt netas and babus also eat up the Republic Day fund. What is the point of this huge show off when we have the poor to feed ?

  3. Akanksha, tend to agree with Purba who can take a swipe at anything with ease! For one day let us close our eyes to the reality and feel happy that we can rant with such ease and enjoy abusing each other at will:)
